I bought this book to use for my 'apology and forgiveness' social emotional lesson. I had the kids read the repeated 'horrible bear!' parts, everyone loved it. The illustrations are simple and beautiful, and kid-relatable, much like the story they tell. My miniscule budget afforded me only enough for two books, this one went in the cart with no question.

Love this new book by Ame Dyckman. Can start a great discussion about accidents, accusations, and apologies.

This is a good story about misunderstandings.

Sweet story tgat children can relate to

This book had a lot of humor in it. The story is about a girl who flies a kite which lands in a bear's caves. When she goes to retrieve the kite, the bear inadvertently crushes it when rolling over during his nap. The girl becomes angry, yelling "HORRIBLE BEAR" all the way home. The bear is perplexed and then he himself grows angry that she called him terrible things. Meanwhile, at home the girl is still raging and accidentally rips her stuffed animal and realizes that accidents occur. The bear arrives at her house, planning to do horrible things and finds her in need of consolation. They return to the cave to patch things up and become friends. (Meanwhile, the a goat outside is munching on the kite tail.)The artwork is eye-catching; colorful and cartoon-like illustrations. The language is minimal and the story is told through stories. It offers children a lesson on anger, forgiveness, accidents and reconciliation. I think though that my toddler is a bit too young for this book. While I wouldn't approve of the girl's actions in basically name-calling and the bear's brief wish for vengeance, these are completely realistic emotions that people often have. This would be a great tool for parents to have discussions with more school age children about interpersonal conflict and how to manage negative emotions. It might be a little much for younger kids as their is so much emphasis on anger. About 75% of the book depicts the two characters indulging in their anger. Not the best bedtime book but definitely a conversation starter about different social skills.

HORRIBLE BEAR by Ame Dyckman tells the humorous, but powerful story of accidents, mistakes, and apologies.Written for young children, this adorable picture book focuses on a young girl who becomes upset when a bear accidentally breaks her kite. She ultimately realizes the impact of her anger and the need for empathy and compassion.Illustrator Zachariah OHora’s use of large, solid blocks of color while still paying attention to facial details make this picture book particularly compelling.Librarians will find the social/emotional themes to be spot-on for early primary grade learners. Teachers will find many opportunities for classroom connections. To learn more about the author, go to [...].To learn more about the illustrator, go to [...]Published by Little Brown Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Hachette on April 5, 2016. Horrible Bear is hilarious, both the story itself and the highly unusual but captivating drawings. Children will laugh and laugh. By accident, Bear turned over in his sleep and broke the girl's kite that flew into his bed without him knowing it was there. She becomes unruly and shouts that the bear is horrible. But, of course he isn't, as any child would know. Bear is upset when he hears what he is called and tries to rectify the situation. Children will learn much from the tale, including that many problems can be resolved simply by saying "I'm sorry."

I ordered this book to use in my class in school. It wasn't what I thought it would be.
