Barnhart has lived this for a long time, and so the lectures come across as story-telling rather than lecturing (although the organization is impeccable). The information is very current all the way into the 2010s, and the course includes plenty of thematic lectures in addition to chronological and site-specific parts.
I learned a LOT from this series which wasn't even known, let alone taught when I did my undergraduate work in the 1960's. If I were planning travel to any of the areas covered in this work, I would heartily recommend it to people wanting a better historical perspective on the region and its' cultures prior to European conquests...
I love the lecture and the professor is very knowledgeable. When I purchased this on audible I did not realize how important having a visual representation of the art work would be that necessary. I would love to be able to see slides that correspond to the images referenced in the lecture.
I live in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico where it is not uncommon to encounter those with more than a casual interest in ancient MesoamericaProfessor Edwin Barnhart steps into the room with a lot of information.
I enjoyed this course so much I listened to the whole thing more than once. I do wish that these came with a pdf listing of each lecture title & the key illustrations he refers to - a few pages would make a big difference. Still - a very well designed and skillfully delivered set of lectures on a great topic.
best book in my entire audible library - bored one week and rented a car in the Yucatan and listened to this the entire time - FANTASTIC !!!!!!
